There is often common thought that a lead singer of a band needs to be a bit weird and batshit crazy. What is it about a lead singer who looks like he or she could at any minute start slamming their face against the microphone until an eyeball pops out, that we find so appealing? Jim Morrison once said ‘If I was normal no one would be interested in me’ maybe Jimbo was onto something. Maybe he had a ghost writer for his poetry and maybe he didn’t after all this time ‘ride the snake to the lake’. But then

How do you like it? Rough and dirty or slow and smooth? Like sex people want their music many different ways depending on what mood they are in or how many shandy’s they have had. It was only yesterday that whilst making a cup of tea I screamed ‘For the love of God why isn’t there a fancy handsome young dynamic sounding band out there that the girls will love with music that isn’t shit!’ It was after the scream and a few breathing exercises I decided to review Lowlanders – was it divine intervention, did God hear my scream

Formed in Moreton on the Wirral in 2009, Pretty Silhouettes really do embody the meaning of Rock n Roll and truly authentic live music which inevitably has you on your feet. This unsigned band have undeniably been working hard since forming in 2009, with 2 E.Ps released to date: “Enjoy the Ride”, released in 2012 and their most recent, “For Whatever Reason” (which I must add, the album artwork is rather cool).Upon listening, I was sucked into a tunnel of nostalgia – throwing myself around in a dark, dingy, sticky-floored venue accompanied by a grungy, rocky, easy-to-dance-to band (Ah… those were

There are two songs under the microscope today (because I could only find two, not because I couldn’t be assed listening to more, honestly…): ‘Sit & Wonder’ and ‘Viral Parasitoid’. Yes, indeed, a parasitoid, I totally know what that is, delicious on toast. For all you people who don’t know what one is (did you even go to school?!): Parasitoid. Noun. An insect whose larvae live as parasites which eventually kill their hosts, e.g. an ichneumon wasp. Duh. Common knowledge. It does actually make sense if you listen to the lyrics, which are clearly defined by the sharp voice of

Do you feel stressed? Uptight? Overworked? Well, unclench, ‘cause LowWinter Sun can sort you out.Instantly relaxing, the dream-like sound of songs like ‘Be Afraid’ is like a little Thai masseuse for your ears, the pleasant voice of the lead taking you by the hand and leading you into an almost surreal reverie. Although the song is sort of lacking in lyrics, it’s nicely paced and I’m pretty sure that if I was having a hallucination, that’s what I’d hear. Okay, you’re successfully unclenched. But what now? Ah, that’s where the more upbeat songs like ‘After the Games’ come in. Still

The classic sound of The City Walls is serene, rhythmic, and smooth as a baby’s arse, and once you’ve heard their songs, if you’re over the age of thirty-five and/or are in a musical, you’ll be clicking your fingers until they’re practically arthritic. The beats seem to correspond with a heart at rest: steady, slow, and full of life, the drums a constant and necessary presence. The lead singer, his voice pleasantly layered, possesses obvious talent. He animates the lyrics, which have relative depth, something that can’t be said for so many popular songs today (if I hear ‘bottle’ rhymed

Disclaimer: my opinion of this band may or may not have been swayed by the fact that one of its members looks like an effing majestic sea captain and I want him to respect me and sing me sea shanties while stroking his glorious beard. The mixture of sounds from Silent Sleep is simply beguiling. The more upbeat songs, like ‘Once or Twice’, ’You Can Colour Me In’, and ’On The Steps of the Bombed Out Church’ have a strangely wholesome vibe and a sweet sound, all jingle bells and cockle shells, similar to the music of Noah and the Whale.

In this day and age, it seems like the key to recognition in the music world is to mildly or not-so-mildly reference the seaside, the sea, or anything affiliated (Swim Deep, Best Coast, I could go on). Although Caves isn’t a direct affiliation, it’s close enough, right?! Due to my complete contradiction in music taste (it really does span far), I was excited to give them a listen, as I’ve a keen ear for new music – particularly when it comes to your indie boy band (not-so-secret fangirl over here). These guys are pretty darn cool, their description on Facebook is nothing

Want to be brought back to those lazy days of driving down long, winding, ridiculously rural roads in the deserts of Nevada, shades on, one arm out of the window and getting a weird tanline? Even if you’ve never been to America and don’t own a convertible or even a car at all? Well then I suggest you listen to the relaxed sounds of Rob Clarke and the Wooltones. Are you excited? I’m excited. But specifically, I’m just going to talk about the songs ‘Butter’ and ‘Our Business’ because the other three ‘songs’ were just the disturbing entrails of the

As being an avid listener and self-confessed dance and electronica superfan, I was excited to hear the somewhat psychedelic sounds produced by this talented artist; Invisible Alliance. Game Theory is the debut, and most celebrated single from the artist and performer. This track gained respect from many music ‘boffins’ in Liverpool when IA performed at the Bandstand at the Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF). Favouring “real sounds” over samples, IA really stands out from the crowd against his “on the spot” looping competitors in the game. When watching IA, you can expect to hear the likes of percussion and guitars which
