The first time I listened to Paul Wilkes was late at night after one of those long days where every ten seconds presented another inconvenience which accumulated into trivial self pity. Ordinarily this mood would take me to a band like Motion City Soundtrack to hear Justin Pierre’s fast paced yet melodic exclamations all along the lines of ‘I wish I was someone else’. But that night I listened to Paul Wilkes and was immediately soothed by his calming tracks. ‘Bluebird’ had a particular resonance with me. The combination of powerful vocals and heartfelt lyrics work beautifully together to create

After listening to two of the first tracks by Liverpudlian quartet Go-Fiasco, I was left thinking about the futility of categorising music into genres. The self described ‘sludge-pop’ band show features of psychadelia, pop, progressive rock, classic rock and at a push, punk. The wide range of influences is more evident in ‘Meet My Mystery’ but works much more successfully in ‘Heaven’ where they are brought together in a smoother way. In fact, ‘Heaven’ is a rather perfect culmination of the afore mentioned styles of music. As a first time listener, I found myself waiting with much anticipation during

A lot has changed for our ‘Silent Sleep’ since we reviewed them last year, and it’s not just the thickness of singer Chris’ amazing beard. It appears they’re not so silent any more. Following the release of their first album, ‘Walk Me to the Sea’, which sounded like exactly the kind of thing that would boost moral on The Queen Anne’s Revenge, they’ve finally swept up another beautiful collection of songs, entitled ‘Stay The Night. Stay The Morning, Too.’. Cheeky. In that time they’ve had some incredible achievements, including performing in Australia (where they sang with one of the guys from

This four-piece from Brighton are certainly ‘going places’. Since their live debut at the Hydrant in their hometown, in 2010, they have released an EP, ‘Not So Black and White’, and have continued to play many gigs on and around the South Coast. Having previously been praised for their ‘professional attitude and strong work ethic’ on the live circuit, they have seemingly brought this trend into the studio with them too. Their EP is produced with a certain slick quality; unexpected, considering their relatively small amount of studio time. This is even more impressive when you discover that they were

Whenever people ask me if I like Ska music I automatically think of The Specials, a band who some consider (me included) to have paved the way for Ska punk. The harsh guitar chords and raw vocals of punk music combined with classic ska rhythms result in a cool sound. You can bop your head chilfully one minute and then glue your hair into spikes the next. Broken 3 Ways do this well. They take the “do-it-yourself” ethos from punk music and mix it in with a skank on the offbeat to get the perfect ska punk atmosphere. I listened

When I was given the band for my 2nd review, Cat Called Dog, I was excited straight away. What a cool name. Seriously, their name alone tells you that the band wants to be different: but are they? That’s what we’re going to talk about. Do they live up to their frankly awesome name? Their Facebook page (you know how we do this – link at the end) tells you that they’re from Skelmersdale (quick Wikipedia search and I now know that’s 13 miles to the northeast of Liverpool, geography and all that). It also tells you that the members

If you’ve ever wondered what the lovechild of Dave Grohl’s vocals, Alex Turner’s lyrics and the Traveling Wilburys’ instruments would sound like look no further. I don’t know how we’d make this musical 3-way work but Victorian Dad, apparently, do. I feel bad comparing them to other bands because it’s just not that simple, I don’t even know what to call it. A quick trip to their Facebook page (I’ll put the link at the end, calm down) left me in confusion; I had no idea what to expect from this band from Wigan (their Facebook also gave me their

How do you like it? Rough and dirty or slow and smooth? Like sex people want their music many different ways depending on what mood they are in or how many shandy’s they have had.

Fully recovered from my exploits at Sound City 2014 (the cut has healed and scab has fallen off) it was high time I got back to the reason this website was created, listening to hot off the press music from Liverpool bands creating original music. A few things made me warm and fuzzy about this one, firstly I received a CD. Yes! Not a link to click, but an actual shiny physical CD with a little handwritten note inside, just as it should be. Secondly, it was a 3 piece band, a trio. Whats the big deal I can almost

Formed in Moreton on the Wirral in 2009, Pretty Silhouettes really do embody the meaning of Rock n Roll and truly authentic live music which inevitably has you on your feet. This unsigned band have undeniably been working hard since forming in 2009, with 2 E.Ps released to date: “Enjoy the Ride”, released in 2012 and their most recent, “For Whatever Reason” (which I must add, the album artwork is rather cool).Upon listening, I was sucked into a tunnel of nostalgia – throwing myself around in a dark, dingy, sticky-floored venue accompanied by a grungy, rocky, easy-to-dance-to band (Ah… those were
